Although the city isn’t known as an incredible place to see the fall colours, Gothenburg, in the autumn is transformed into an orange oasis! As the short days start to set in and (usually) we see rainfall every day, there is nothing cosier than making the most of the few sunny days by walking around surrounded by autumn colours! Here are some of the best places to see the autumn in Gothenburg, Sweden!

The best places to see autumn in Gothenburg, Sweden
Nya Allén – The best street for autumn in Gothenburg
Nya Allén is one of the most spectacular streets to see the autumn colours in Gothenburg! Running down beside Trädgårdsföreningen and Kungsparken, the trees turn a vibrant orange. While here, you can also see the red trees outside Store Teatern which are some of the first trees to change colour in the city!
Slottskogen – A natural oasis of autumn in Gothenburg
Centrally located, there is no better place to see the changing of seasons from summer to autumn in Gothenburg. From the start of October the trees begin to change colour and throughout the next two months the park is a shifting landscape of colours! Strolling around Lilla Dammen, down towards Hallandstugan, and round to August Kobbs Damm you will see the best colours!
Alingsås – The country town of fika
Although it is not technically in Gothenburg, I add Alingsås to the list as it is only 30 minutes away by train and makes an easy autumn day trip from Gothenburg! Alingsås is a very picturesque town, known for “fika” and it’s beautiful Nolhaga park that lights up orange in the fall. Visit Nolhaga’s Lekplats and say hi to the goats and horses and stroll through the park behind the Slott for autumn movie vibes! Just beside, in the community garden, you will find some very pretty views, narrow alleys and apple trees!
In the evenings during the Autumn they hold “Lights in Alingsås”. This event displays pieces from light design artists from all over the world and is a great way to explore the city!
Trädgårdsföreningen – for the best autumn colours in Gothenburg
Trädgårdsföreningen is my favourite place to watch the seasons change in Gothenburg! In the autumn, there is a big variety in colour as the trees and bushes turn red, orange, yellow and even purple!
Haga, Slottskogen and Vasagatan – A cosy walk
Haga itself is not the best place for autumn colours, although it is still very fall vibes as the shops all place pumpkins on their doorsteps. However, Hagakyrkan park is beautiful in the autumn. From here, you can stroll down Vasagatan where the streets light up with firefly red trees. On the other side, Skansen Kronan gives a beautiful view of the autumn colours over the whole of Gothenburg! I recommend coming up here at sunset on a sunny day as that is when the oranges really light up!
Kungälv – A medieval adventure outside of Gothenburg
Kungälv is another town just north of Gothenburg. The old town is stunning, and in the autumn the park surrounding Bohus Fästningsparken lights up with orange! On the weekends, the fortress is open to visitors and they hold events such as outdoor performances from The Gothenburg Symphonica and medieval markets! Strolling around the old town you will find beautiful views from the top of the Kärleksstigen, and wonderful sunsets from the Strandpromenaden!

Amazing help for my Sweden plans 🙂
What time of year did you go? Late September? Mid October?
Also, for Trädgårdsföreningen I’m a little confused. When I google it I get a clean cut garden with seemingly no tall trees and lush plants like your photos. Help?

Hi! I live in Gothenburg so was there all throughout the autumn but most of these photos were taken in early October. The best time for foliage changes year to year though based on the weather. Trädgårdsföreningen is the big city park and while there is a clean cut garden, theres also another area with bushes, trees and plants in which is beautiful in the autumn! Hope that helps.
