Second-hand shopping is something I definitely didn’t do as much of until moving to Sweden. The quality and range of things you can find in second-hand shops in Gothenburg are so much better than we have in most places in Australia. There are quite a few second-hand shops in Gothenburg, some selling more hand-picked labels, some selling mainly furniture and some selling a great selection of clothes! As with all second-hand shopping, you can’t always expect them to have what you are looking for. The best way to shop is to go in with no expectations, and you will probably come out with something you never knew you were looking for!
This post is still growing and I will update it with any new shops we come across that I think you should know about! Let me know if you have any favourites in the comments!
How to recognise a second-hand shop in Gothenburg
The word for second hand in Swedish is “loppis”. Most city second-hand shops won’t say this, but if you are venturing out of the town you will likely see signs for “loppis” scattered along the side of the road on a regular basis! Most of these are either small second-hand boutiques, or simply people selling off their things like a garage sale! These countryside second-hand shops can often be the most fun as you really never know what you will find there! Second-hand shopping is definitely the best way to live on a budget in Sweden, whether you are buying furniture for a new apartment or just upgrading your wardrobe! It is also one of the easiest ways to make a sustainable change.
The best second-hand shops in Gothenburg
Myrorna, Järntorgsgatan
This is probably the most well-known second-hand shop in Gothenburg. It is located right in the heart of the city, about a 5-minute walk from Järntorget! The shop is 4 levels in total, each selling different things! The first level is full of books, old records and tableware. The upper levels all have clothes, including men’s, women’s and children’s. The levels are kind of sorted out but I am not sure into which categories so the best way is to just look through every level! The top floor often has some of the coolest retro second-hand clothes like old jackets and dresses from the 80s! This is also a great shop for second-hand costume shopping as they have a section at the back split into different eras!
Björkå Secondhand, Linnégatan
Björkå second hand is one of the best shops in Gothenburg for second-hand clothing! It is a little more expensive here but they always have a massive range of trendy clothes! It is quite a small shop with a lot of inventory so can be quite busy on weekends!
HUMANA Second Hand, Kaserntorget
HUMANA second-hand shop is one of the more curated in Gothenburg. This obviously makes it a little more expensive – but the range and quality are usually the best! They have a lot of more retro clothing and a great range of shirts and pants! This is a really popular shop so can get really busy during weekends!
Stadsmissionens Second Hand, Gamlestadsvägen
This second-hand shop is a little further outside of Gothenburg but can be a great place to stop at if you are passing! There is always a great range of cheap tablewares, a few clothes and some electronics! This is the best second-hand shop to visit at Christmas as they always have so many quality decorations!
Arkivet
This is my FAVOURITE second-hand shop in Gothenburg! It is a curated shop, so neatly arranged you wouldn’t be able to tell it was second-hand unless you knew. They have a range of things here, from H&M tops to branded coats. Everything is good quality and although it is a little pricier than the other second-hand shops, the things they have are usually the best! This second-hand shop is located near Järntorget.
Majornas Saker Från Förr, Mariagatan
Majornas saker från förr translates to Majornas things from before and thats just what this place has! Everything here is retro and the shop looks like its come right out of the mid 20th century. You can always find great furniture, tableware and unique bits and bobs here!
Smyrna Second Hand, Ringögatan
Located in the north of Gothenburg, this second hand shop is a great place to go for furniture, clothes and craft supplies. It is one of the cheaper shops and their inventory changes on quite a regular basis!
Återbruket, Gamlestadsvägen
Återbruket is the best second-hand shop to visit for anything involving old doors, pots or machines! Here you can find sewing machines, washing machines, and doors for every type of house! You will need a car to get here, especially if you are buying some of the bigger items!
Second Hand För Ungdomsidrotten, Kungälv
This is one of the best second hand stores for tableware and occasionally clothes in Kungälv. It is a little bit further away from the centre of Gothenburg but worth a visit if you are in the Kungälv area! Here you can also find a lot of second hand books and children/s toys!
Lee R says
Loppis isn’t the word for second hand in Swedish. A loppis is just a fleamarket basically.
