The Tree Cube is definitely one of the most unique wind shelters on the High Coast, if not the whole of Sweden. Built as part of the ARKNAT Höga Kusten project, The Tree Cube is a cube treehouse hidden in the forest, free to visit and sleep in overnight! In this guide, I will go through everything you need to know when visiting the Tree Cube, including how to get there, what to bring, and what to expect!
So, let’s get started!
Where is the Tree Cube wind shelter in Sweden?
The Tree Cube is located in Northern Sweden, in an area called the High Coast. This area is known for having the highest coastline in the world, as well as beautiful lush forests and hiking trails. The High Coast is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its unique landscapes. These were formed over 10,000 years ago during the melting of the glaciers after the ice age. The Tree Cube wind shelter is located in the forest near the town of Nordingrå, one of the most popular places to visit on the High Coast.
How do you get to the Tree cube?
The Tree Cube is really easy to reach, only a short hike from Nordingrå that takes around 20 to 30 minutes. The hike begins at the church in Nordingrå. There is a carpark here which is free to use overnight. From the carpark, there are two options of route. We took one up and another down.
To begin the hike up, begin walking up Klockarvägen. When you have passed all the houses and the path opens up into a big field, you will see a sign to the right indicating a hiking trail. The hike follows the same path as the Högakustleden (High Coast Trail). This is marked with orange tape for most of the route. You will notice that the Tree Cube wind shelter is sign posted too on the larger signs.
From here, follow the orange tape up the hill. The trail begins with a fairly flat forest, before turning into a steeper, more rocky, path. After 10 minutes, you will reach a sign which points to the left, while the orange path continues right. Follow this path straight and you will see the tree cube.
On the way back, follow the same path down the hill. When you reach the intersection where you initially turned left up the hill, instead take the path on the opposite side. It is more of an open, grassy road. At the end of the road, you will turn right and follow the path down to Nordingrå. It ends at the sports club where you can turn right and head back to Nordingrå church car park.
Do you need to book the Tree Cube?
No, you do not. All of the ARKNAT wind shelters are free to use and do not need to be booked in advance. Keep in mind that they are very popular, and you may find you’re not the only people wanting to spend the night there. My best advice for this is to head to the Tree Cube in the late afternoon and hope to be the first to arrive.
How Many People Can Sleep in The Tree Cube?
The Tree Cube is not a massive treehouse wind shelter, so it only fits about 3 people. You may be able to squeeze a few more in, but it might not be very comfortable.
Does the Tree Cube have doors?
Yes, the tree cube has several doors and windows which can be opened and closed! This is really great, especially in the summer, as a protection against mosquitoes. However, I still definitely recommend bringing mosquito repellent if you are staying the night here.
What facilities are there by The Tree Cube ARKNAT Wind Shelter?
The Tree Cube itself is a wind shelter where you can spend the night. At the base of the treehouse you will find a concrete fire pit and wooden benches perfect for making dinner or enjoying a fika. Other than this, there are no other facilities in the area.
