Gothenburg is known as ”Sweden’s Christmas City”, and for good reason! From late November through to Christmas the city lights up the winter months with Christmas events happening basically every day all through the city. The Gothenburg Christmas markets are somewhat famous in Sweden, and something that cannot be missed. Whether you are looking for an urban city market, hand-made arts and crafts, or want to be strolling around a winter wonderland, there is something for everyone.
In this guide you will find a list of all the best Christmas Markets in Gothenburg and West Sweden. I have also made a mini-guide and downloadable calendar with all the dates marked out to make it all easier to understand! You can download it here.
I have lived in Gothenburg for almost 5 years and have become a little obsessed with the Christmas Markets here. Liseberg has become a frequently visited destination in December, with cheap ice skate hire and the cosiest atmosphere, while there is not a year I have missed a market at Tjolöholms Slott. If you are looking to buy unique gifts, then don’t miss À la London Design Market, and for something a little different head to Borås for Bruket i Wiared’s fantastic events.
Hope that has you excited for this season! Let’s get started.

The Best Christmas Markets in Gothenburg 2024
Liseberg Christmas Markets
Liseberg Christmas Market (Liseberg Julmarknad) runs from the 16th November to the 29th December. This is, in my opinion, the cosiest and best Christmas market in Gothenburg. If you are only going to visit one Christmas market in Gothenburg, this is definitely the one you should go to. The atmosphere in Liseberg is completely transformed into a winter wonderland as soon as November hits, with Christmas lights, fire pits and carols playing throughout the amusement park. Stalls are set up serving hot chocolates and waffles. Markets line the streets selling handmade products such as cloudberry jam and knitted socks. Christmas rides run and one is transformed into Santa’s workshop where you can post your own wishlist off to Father Christmas. It’s pure magic.
To get to the Christmas market you will need to buy a ticket for general admission. This means you can walk around the park and enjoy the stalls. If you want to ride the rides you can either buy tickets individually or purchase a ride pass (park entry included). The prices vary depending which day you visit, but entry is from 125kr and ride passes from 255kr. If you already have a yearly park entry pass you won’t need to pay anything.
If you want to make your visit even more magical, you can check in at Liseberg’s Grand Curiosa Hotel for the weekend. The hotel is very much like the theme park – special in every day. It’s right next to the entrance, and located in the city centre, so perfect location for both Liseberg and the other Christmas markets around town. The park is open Friday to Sunday during November, Wednesday to Sunday the first two weeks of December, and every day the week leading up to Christmas. Kronhuset
Gothenburg’s historic quarter hosts Kronhusjul this year with lots of different activities, markets, and performances throughout November and December. There are Christmas Markets during the first three advent weekends (30 November/1 December, 7/8 December, 14/15 December). This concept is new for this year so I can’t say much more about it, however, we were at Kronhuset for a Christmas Market a few years ago and just being in the historic environment was really cosy! Kronhuset is in the centre of the city so it’s not a big detour to go and check it out! Find information about the events and markets here.
They have several different themes over the weeks; Inget nytt under granen, Den GOA julen, and HDK julmarknad. Inget Nytt under Granen (Nothing new under the tree) is a sustainability festival with arts, crafts, second-hand and vintage stalls as well as workshops. Den GOA julen (The Good Christmas) is the most Christmas market like event. There will be food, crafts, designers, and all sorts of nice things being sold and exhibited. HDK Julmarknad is a market run in collaboration with students at HDK-Valand, with ceramic, books, and other bits being sold!
A la London Art and Design Market
This Christmas market is a lot of fun and the place you are probably going to be able to find the most unique gifts. Featuring different local artists, the art and design market only runs for one weekend in late November (22nd to the 24th). This is my go-to place to buy Christmas gifts as there is such variety in the arts and crafts being sold. We have bought so many different prints for our home, ceramics, and even clothes at this market over the years. This market can get very busy and unfortunately you cannot buy tickets in advance. I recommend arriving early or allowing a lot of time to wait for entry! For more information about the Gothenburg Christmas market at A la London click here!
Nordstan Christmas Market
Nordstan’s Christmas market is maybe not the cosiest of Gothenburg’s Christmas markets, but located in the centre of Nordstan shopping centre its an easy one to pass by while you’re in the city. Here you will find a mix of crafts and commercial producers selling foods, jewellery and glögg (sweet mulled wine). It’s always cosy to visit but you won’t need a whole day here. The Christmas market is open from the 1st to the 23rd December.
Haga Christmas Market
Haga Christmas market is one of the most well known and traditional Christmas markets in Gothenburg. This part of Gothenburg, Haga, is the “old town” of the city. Every December the Main Street “Haganygatan” holds a Christmas market. Here you can buy souvenirs, arts and crafts and Swedish delicacies. Along the street you will find cafe husaren, one of the best places for a fika in the city. Around Christmas, they have an outdoor stall where they sell their famous giant cinnamon buns. You will also find giant lussekatter (a traditional Christmas saffron bun) and other treats! The Christmas Market takes place every weekend in December on both Saturdays and Sundays.
Gunnebo Slott
Gunnebo Slott is another old house located just outside of the city of Gothenburg. This old manor house is known for their ecological and traditional style of tending to the gardens and plants and renovating the house and buildings in its grounds. They have a Christmas market that takes place on the 16/17 November, 23/24 November, 30th Nov/1st December. The market is free to enter and is usually quite big, with lots of local food producers. You can find more information about Christmas at Gunnebo Slott here.
As well as a market, Gunnebo Slott also have one of the best Christmas meals (Julbord) in Gothenburg. What makes this Christmas table so special is that the majority of ingredients come from the property. They often create dishes with really unique taste profiles so it is not always exactly as your traditional Swedish Christmas table. The gardens are decorated with small Christmas trees and wreaths and there is a small market stall in the garden of the cafe selling jams, flower arrangement and some home made arts and crafts. Find out more here.
Kvarnbyn, Mölndal
If you want a more immersive Christmas market, then Kvarnbyn in Mölndal is perfect! Located in the old industrial area of Kvarnbyn, this Christmas market makes the most of all the old buildings by decorating them inside and out to make a real little Christmas village. As well as taking a fika and looking through the market stalls, you can also look around the old buildings and learn a bit more about industrial life in Sweden back in the day.
This year “Jul i Kvarnbyn” is on during the first three weekends in December – 30 Nov/ 1 Dec, 7/8 Dec, 14/15 Dec. Find more information on this page.
The Best Christmas Markets in West Sweden 2024
Kobergs Slott
Kobergs Slott is one of the big castles near Gothenburg. Usually closed to the public, the castle opens up its barn, stables, and grounds for their annual Christmas Market. This year it will be held from the 21st to 24th November. The market can get quite busy, but I would say it is definitely worth visiting just to see the castle. Last year, it was a beautiful weekend with sunshine and snow covering the grounds and it was so beautiful. Everything you need to know is on this page.
Tjolöholms Slott
I know I said Liseberg was the market you have to visit, but Tjolöholms Slott definitely comes a close second. Tjolöholms Slott is an old manor house by the sea in Halland, just 1 hour south of Gothenburg. The stables are transformed into three separate Christmas markets with food stalls, home-made goods and local delicacies. You are free to walk around the houses gardens, and along the way you will likely bump into several actors dressed up as those from the late 1800s. The house is open for tours and the dining room is used as a cafe where they sell fika as well as hold traditional Christmas dinners in the evenings.
Usually this Christmas market only runs in November but luckily this year they have decided to extend the opening so it runs for three weekends throughout the season. These are the 22-24 November, 29th November – 1st December, and the 6th – 8th December 2024. You need to buy tickets to visit which can be booked online or bought on site. There can sometimes be quite a queue to buy them on site so I recommend purchasing online beforehand if you know you will definitely be going! For more information about the Christmas market at Tjolöholms Slott click here!
Bruket i Wiared
Bruket I Wiared is one of my favourite farm shops/ restaurants to visit all year round. Located just outside of Borås, around 30 minutes from Gothenburg, they have one of the cosiest Christmas markets. The farm shop/ cafe is transformed into a mini Christmas village, with the smell of roasted nuts filling the air. If you can, you should definitely visit this Christmas market this year! It is on the 23rd/24th November and the 30th November/1st December this year. They are open 10 till 17 on both days. You can keep up to date with this Christmas market here!
Bohus Fästning
The Christmas Market at Bohus Fästning (Bohus fortress) is a Christmas market you can’t miss! Set in the historic fortress, this market has so much character. As you arrive you walk through the old castle entrance with candle lit torches on each side, arriving in the open courtyard filled with small market stalls and the smell of roasting nuts. It is so cosy here and the perfect Christmas market day trip. The market is on from 11 – 16 on the 30th November and 1st December 20234 I recommend buying tickets in advance here.
